Meet Roy Remme

Geplaatst in Uncategorized.

In courses around biodiversity we will see a new face this semester. We asked Astus to get to know Roy:
Hi Roy. Nice to meet you. Tell us, who are you?
I’ve recently started as Assistant Professor of Environmental Biology at the Institute of Environmental Science (CML). My research focusses on understanding the spatial dynamics of human-nature relationships in cities, with a focus on the benefits we gain from urban nature. I live in Utrecht with my wife Ilse and two young kids Mara and Sam, after having recently returned from a two-year stay in the San Francisco Bay Area in the US.

What is the main thing you would like to change in cities?
Perhaps unsurprising, given the focus of my research, I want to ensure that nature plays a more central role in cities, as it provides us a multitude of benefits, whether for climate adaptation, enjoyment, health, or as a safe haven for an important part of our planet’s biodiversity.

What is your favourite city and what makes that city stand out?
This is probably the most difficult question in the list, there are so many cities I love for a variety of reasons, including Havana, Harare, San Francisco, Barcelona, and Copenhagen. In the end I’ll go for my home, Utrecht. The main reason it stands out is that it really feels like home. I’ve lived in many cities, but one reason Utrecht stands out is its relaxed atmosphere, combining elements of a big city with ‘small town’ charm. Mix in the historic charm of the centre, bike friendliness, multicultural population and overall progressive mentality and it is great place to live.

What is your main point of thought or philosophy you want to share with your students in the future?
The main point is to ensure we as people reconnect to nature, especially in urban areas. It is very important that (future) urbanites get a chance to connect to nature, and feel that we are all part of the same system earth that is crucial for our society to thrive.

Have you developed a new pastime during the pandemic?
Not really. I have been able to spend more time with my kids (1 and 3 years old), and closely seen how they learned to grasp new aspects of life (walking, talking, getting interested in ABCs).

According to your expertise, any (green) tips for “surviving” the pandemic?
A main message is to go outside frequently, whether for some sports or just a walk, whether it along the beach, in a forest, or just around the neighborhood. Try to get your dose of nature, wherever you are, because it has a positive effect on your mental health and can help you relax.
