What is Critical Urbanists?

Critical Urbanists is the first committee created for ASTUS, Urban Studies’ study association. A group of friends was having several discussions regarding injustice within the urban environment. Now, they have expanded their friend group to a platform for peers to share their vision or debate. The sessions that are organised are meant to broaden your scope and dive into topics of your interest, that are not as much discussed in classes or workgroups as you would like to. The past discussions were about topics such as ableism and the feminist city, these discussions are fully open to different perspectives.

How does it work?

The committee looks up a couple of articles relating to a new topic they are desperate to talk about and then reads it. To prepare for one of the discussions as a guest, you can read the article. The reading of the article is only to create a basis of knowledge, not because it is mandatory. If you are interested in the topic, you are more than welcome to join.

Usually, the meeting starts off with checking in on everyone and giving a little summary of the reading. The “big” conversation starts from there, what stood out is then discussed, which involves to an exchange of knowledge that is not necessarily based on the article. These discussions are accessible, not too formal and all about broadening your scope. Critical Urbanists are still very open for other ideas (such as topics, articles, podcasts, movies, etc. ) and other formats, if you come up with any please contact them.

How can you join?

To join the committee or the discussions, you can contact Critical Urbanists through their email; criticalurbanists.astus@gmail.com. Peers from other studies and you lecturers out there you are welcome too.
